Youngsters move out of their parents' homes at some point in their lives. It is a natural part of growing up and entering adulthood. It's also common today for youth to migrate to other cities or countries to pursue higher education and seek better career opportunities. For some, it can be exciting as they wish to seek independence and look for new experiences. But for some others, it can be quite overwhelming and challenging.
Transitions involve adjusting to a new place, making new friends, reorganising priorities and building a social life. For youngsters joining residential colleges, the systematic routine and rules can be new and worrying, while for others living independently, there's the stress of having to deal with living costs and other expenses. If you have never stayed away from your parents, you may:
Feel overwhelmed at the change of place
Experience a language barrier
Get anxious about meeting new people
Feel homesick
Experience loneliness, low-self-esteem
Feel that you are unable to focus on studies or sleep properly
Here are some ways that you can deal with the situation:
Prepare beforehand and decide whether you will stay in a hostel or independently
Team up with your existing friends and discuss about relocating together
Network with old students from the college and learn from their experiences
Approach the student welfare division of your college if you have any concerns
Consider taking up part-time work or joining clubs. It is a great way to meet new people!
Most overwhelming thoughts and fears are transient and can be overcome with the right coping tools. However if these thoughts and feelings are persistent and affect your daily life, seek help from a mental health professional. You can find out if you have a campus counselor and approach them.
