World Alzheimer's month at NIMHANS

The Geriatric Clinic and Services of NIMHANS organized an hour-long program to celebrate World Alzheimer’s Month on Tuesday, September 27, 2016. Held at the Arts Theatre at NIMHANS, the program also featured Dr Ann Margriet Pot, of the WHO, and Dr Kala Mehta, from Stanford University. The program began with a brief introuction by Dr Mathew Varghese and Dr Santosh Loganathan, both from the department of pscyhiatry at NIMHANS. Dr Pot then went on to speak about the challenges faced by caregivers of people with dementia and the immense stress they may subsequently experience. She went on to highlight the importance of support for these caregivers, and the opportunities that technology can provide in this regard. Dr Mehta spoke about the prevalence of dementia in low- and middle-income countries, which stands at 58%, but alarmingly, is projected to rise to 71% by 2050. She touched upon the position of caregivers of people with dementia in the US. The program culminated with the announcement of iSupport, an e-platform to provide support to caregivers of people with dementia. The platform, which is currently going into its testing phase, has been developed by the WHO, in collaboration with NIMHANS, Stanford University, and a few other eminent institutions.
