Eating disorders vs body image

People often assume that eating disorders are all about body image issues...
Eating disorders vs body image

We all perceive our physical selves in a certain manner. This could be positive, where we feel good about ourselves, or negative, where we think we are "too short", "too tall", "too dark", "too fat" and so on. Negative body image can have an adverse effect on our self-esteem and lead to various emotional issues.

Eating disorders are serious mental illnesses that require treatment. People develop eating disorders as a result of various psychological, social and behavioral influences. However, the most common underlying cause is that it gives the person a sense of control, when other aspects of their life seem out of control. A negative body image may be one of the factors that contribute to the development of an eating disorder, but not the only cause.
