Depression is a common mental disorder with a set of symptoms that affect a person's thoughts, feelings, behavior, and relationships. In some cases, it may also lead to thoughts of suicide and death. Various psychological therapies have been found effective in treating depression along with medication when necessary.

Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is a structured, conversation-based therapy. It is a treatment that helps identify dysfunctional thought patterns and behaviors. The therapist and client set goals and work towards them. Action plans are created to be completed in between sessions.

The practice of yoga as an additional form of treatment can help alleviate symptoms of depression. It is a self-soothing technique that promotes mindfulness, decreases degeneration of brain cells, and improves cognitive functions. Specific yoga asanas (poses) are designed to help combat depressive symptoms.

Animal assisted therapy (AAT) involves caring for or spending time with an animal during a goal-oriented therapy session. It helps decrease symptoms of depression. The presence of an animal during a therapy session helps build rapport, aids in the release of endorphins, and provides feelings of companionship and acceptance.

Play therapy involves using games or play to help children express difficult emotions. The therapist understands the child’s needs through a non-directive approach. It results in giving the child catharsis and insight.
