What does pressure to excel do to a teenager?

Knowing teenagers with Aarti C Rajaratnam

Parents and teachers often tend to assume that pushing children to be perfect at an extracurricular activity, or asking them to achieve 90 percent marks in their exams is helpful to them but is this always the case? What happens when a teenager doesn’t learn how to cope with not succeeding at something, or doesn’t have the chance to know that it might be okay to be less than perfect? This video talks about how the pressure to always perform and excel affects an adolescent.

‘Knowing teenagers with Aarti C Rajaratnam’ is a fortnightly video column for parents, teachers, and adults who interact with teenagers. Each episode will share insights that will help the audience understand the adolescent mind and behavior.

Aarti C Rajaratnam is a clinical psychologist who has been working with children and teenagers for over two decades.
