How to intervene if a teenager has been abused?

Knowing teenagers with Aarti C Rajaratnam

Abuse refers to the misuse of power in any unequal relationship in a person’s life. This can manifest in the form of physical, emotional or sexual abuse. Research has shown that being subjected to abusive behavior can alter neural pathways in the survivor’s brain. In order to help prevent children from getting hurt through such behavior, it is important to first learn the signs displayed by someone who is being abused/has been abused, and find ways to intervene.

‘Knowing teenagers with Aarti C Rajaratnam’ is a fortnightly video column for parents, teachers, and adults who interact with teenagers. Each episode will share insights that will help the audience understand the adolescent mind and behavior.

Aarti C Rajaratnam is a clinical psychologist who has been working with children and teenagers for over two decades.
