Nine life skills all teenagers must learn Life skills are an effective tool for empowering young people to act responsibly, take initiative and take control. When young people are able to rise above emotional stoppages arising from daily conflicts, entangled relationships and peer pressure, they are less likely to resort to antisocial or high-risk behaviours. Life skills can help teenagers navigate any social and emotional challenges they face, through their adolescence and into adulthood.The World Health Organization lists nine life skills that are important for all adolescents. Self- awareness Self-awareness is an understanding one's own self, strengths and weaknesses, likes and dislikes.
Empathy Empathy is the ability to understand and care for others' feelings, needs and desires.
Critical thinking Critical thinking is the ability to analyze information and experiences objectively.
Creative thinking Being able to see or do things from a fresh perspective.
Problem solving The ability to look at a problem, consider different solutions and arrive at a decision after weighing the pros and cons.
Interpersonal relationship skills Being able to keep harmonious relationships with friends and family, and being able to end relationships constructively.
Effective communication Being able to express themselves verbally and non-verbally, in ways that are appropriate to the culture and context.
Coping with stress The ability to recognize sources of stress, understanding its impact and coping with stress positively.
Coping with emotions Recognizing emotions within themselves and others, and being able to respond to them in appropriate ways.
