National Science Day a grand success at NIMHANS

Over 3,000 people attended an exhibition organised as part of the National Science Day celebrations at NIMHANS today. The theme this year was 'Science and Technology for specially-abled persons'. Various exhibits were on display, including brain specimens and scientific instruments used to measure the activity of the brain. Visitors could also participate in interesting mind games. Various stalls with demonstrations of brain functions were also part of the exhibition.

Speaking on the topic 'Discovery is the Mother of Invention', Dr Patnam R Krishnaswamy stressed the need for fundamental research, saying basic science had taken a back seat in recent years. Dr Patnam R Krishnaswamy is the Visiting Chair, Centre for Nano Science and Engineering, IISc, Bengaluru and Scientific Advisor and Emeritus Professor, Sri Devaraj Urs Academy of Higher Education and Research, Kolar.

Prof C N Manjunath, Director, Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research, Bengaluru, was the chief guest. Speaking on the occasion, he talked about the need to kindle the spirit of science in youngsters. Highlighting the fact that cardio-vascular diseases were on the rise, he said we are in an era of man-made diseases. Young Indians, he said, are increasingly becoming vulnerable to stress-related disorders like hypertension, stroke and diabetes.
