Q

What is a helpline?

A

A helpline is a free service that provides emotional support and information to anyone in distress. It is a space where you can discuss your problem without being judged. Most helplines offer support over the telephone, but some also offer online guidance through email.

Q

When should I call a helpline?

A

You can call a helpline not just when you are in a crisis, but also when you need general information or clarity on a situation you are facing. You can call the helpline for yourself or for someone you care about.

Q

What can I expect when I call a helpline?

A

When you call a helpline, you will be connected to a counselor (or a trained professional) who will have a fair understanding of the problems you encounter (for example, stressed about the exam, low level of confidence etc). Helplines are all about listening and guiding you towards the right decision. To facilitate this, the counselor may ask you some basic questions such as your age and the details of the problem you are experiencing. Then the counselor will listen to all that you have to say, without intrusion or judgement. Based on the information you provide, they will help you find a good solution or refer you to an expert.

Q

Will the information I share be confidential?

A

Talking to a helpline counselor is a lot like having a conversation with a friend except that you do not have to reveal your name. All helpline conversations happen on the condition of anonymity and what you share will remain confidential, unless the circumstance calls for a breach of confidentiality (for example, the caller poses a threat to themselves or others etc). It might be helpful to clarify the confidentiality agreement with the helpline operator before proceeding with the call.
